New Zealand Expo Pavillion, Serville Spain

[ezcol_2third]

The Brief – was to design an expo pavilion the presented the New Zealand culture to the world, from our landscape, Maori Culture, the Arts, Sport, our unique food, Budget – $11,000,000.00

Peter Hill of Peter Hill Architects designed the building while Karl Majurey assisted & documented the project. This was a once in a life time opportunity to design a building that represented New Zealand we nick named it “The Elegant Shed”. We designed a building to suit the function that was required rather than an Architectural statement, which most other Pavilions did. It was one of the top seven pavilions at expo & was kept by the Spanish Government at the end of the event. No others were as you had to remove your building from site once the event ended.

“The Pavilion Synthesises a more orthodox ‘architectural’ approach with elements of show business & exhibition design in a highly unusual & striking fashion. The ‘architecture’ has produced a most supple flexible & accommodating body around the soul or magic of the Pavilion concept. The widely acknowledged success of the Pavilion in Seville provides the ultimate proof of a project intelligently conceived & efficiently executed (in very trying conditions)”
Ian Fraser – New Zealand’s Commissioner general to Expo ‘92’
